One of the often overlooked aspects of getting your business off the ground is simply setting your environment up to be productive.
There are countless forces seeking to distract you from your goals. These forces vary depending on your individual circumstances – For me it’s usually toddlers! Even if they aren’t in the home office, I can usually hear them elsewhere in the house. As adorable as they are, (and they are) this can be wildly distracting. Whichever forces are vying for your attention, you’ll need to cultivate a focused environment for yourself if you hope to succeed.
So before you get started with your world changing startup idea, project, or what-have-you, I recommend you set the mood with a little music.
Studies indicate that your positive mental state AND your actual productivity increase, with the right music. For me, that’s not just any music, but specifically LYRICLESS music. This can range from classical composers like Bach, Mozart, etc. to modern upbeat electronic music – I find Spotify has a great selection of “mood music” to choose from. Try this relatively relaxed playlist for starters.
If you don’t have Spotify, there are plenty of free videos on Youtube that have multi-hour long soundtracks which nicely fill this need.
The counterpoint here is that if I’m listening to anything with lyrics, I find the music is a net negative to my focus and productivity. My brain will be unconsciously processing the lyrics and I end up less focused than if I was just listening to nothing, or toddlers.
Additionally, music is actually counterproductive when you’re attempting to learn something new. Have you ever been searching for a place while driving, and felt the need to turn down the radio? Same mechanism. If you’re learning a new skill, or following a tutorial, you want quiet.
I also recommend getting yourself a nice pair of headphones. Noise-cancelling isn’t essential, but are certainly a nice luxury. For starters, I’d look at ordering a nice Razer Kraken headset. The bonus on that headset is having a high quality mic attached to your headphones, which is useful when you’re dealing with regular conference calls.
