Cryptocurrency FAQs

1What is Cryptocurrency?
"Cryptocurrency" broadly refers to digital currencies in which encryption techniques are used to regulate the generation of units of currency and verify the transfer of funds, operating independently of a central bank.

The most well known cryptocurrency is Bitcoin, and several alternative coins or "Altcoins" are beginning to go mainstream as well - Litecoin, Dogecoin, Espers, and others.
2What is a "Blockchain"?
The Blockchain is the foundation of cryptocurrency technology. The Blockchain functions as a digital ledger in which transactions made in bitcoin or another cryptocurrency are recorded chronologically and publicly.

The "blocks" are actually encrypted keys which are generated through the use of mining and staking. New blocks are created at a relatively stable rate, much like the way a country's Central Bank might dictate how much new money is printed per year.

3Is it secure?
Relatively, yes.

Transactions are conducted directly through a coin's Blockchain and require no intermediaries or oversight.

You can store your cryptocurrency wallets in different ways, with varying levels of security. Best practices are to keep a local wallet on your private computer, which you can encrypt for an added layer of security.

Storing your currency in online wallets (such as on an exchange like Poloniex or Coinbase) is a less secure method, as sites like these have been the subject of hacks in the past.

And just like your real wallet, if someone gains access to your wallet, they have access to your funds. Keep that wallet secure!
4What can I buy with it?
People have bought everything from pizzas to houses using cryptocurrency.

Since Bitcoin was released in 2008, the marketplace for goods and services that take transactions in cryptocurrency has exploded.

If you are looking for a specific service, it's best to consult google and look for positive user reviews. Communities like Reddit are also very helpful in this capacity.
5Can I trade it?
Yes!

There are now several online exchanges which trade in dozens of cryptocurrencies.

We recommend Coinbase for purchases and transfers, and Poloniex for trading.
6How much is it worth?
As of May 20th, 2017, a single Bitcoin is worth more than $2,000. Prices remain volatile, but many investors see Bitcoin as a solid long-term investment.

Alternative coins, or "Alt-Coins", are a volatile market of cryptocurrencies that are competing for market share with Bitcoin. Beware - not all altcoins are created equal. Some are built by innovative teams with the latest in innovative technology. Others, not so much.

Do your research on coins before investing or trading! And as always, never invest more than you can afford to lose.
7What is the advantage of purchasing or trading altcoins?
The potential upside of altcoins is of significant interest to investors, as Bitcoin technology is still incredibly new and not widely understood.

For an idea of the gains people hope to see, in 2010 10,000 Bitcoin was worth approximately $25. Today 10,000 Bitcoin is worth over $20 Million.

Nobody knows if Bitcoin will remain the dominant cryptocurrency, but investment in the right altcoin(s) today has significant upside potential.
